The opportunity to bring iSeries to Bell Centre came together naturally.

For Bell Centre, the objective wasn’t simply to add another camera angle. The goal was to capture the energy of the venue in a way that traditional camera positions couldn’t.

Built for the Reality of a Multi-Purpose Venue

Bell Centre isn’t just home to hockey.

Throughout the year, the venue regularly transitions between NHL games, concerts, and major live events. That operational reality became one of the most important considerations during planning.

鈥淪ometimes they need to set up the cable cam again in less than a day because you have an NHL game following a concert the next day.鈥

While the initial installation can be completed during the off-season, restoring the system after a concert requires speed, efficiency, and careful planning. Every aspect of the deployment was designed to support fast turnaround times while maintaining the same operational standards expected for every event.

The challenge isn’t simply installing the system鈥攊t’s ensuring it can be deployed, removed, and returned to consistent and safe operation quickly enough to support the demanding schedule of a modern entertainment venue.

According to Ung, the initial installation can typically be completed in about a week, while returning the system to operation after an event is designed to take no more than half a day, helping Bell Centre maintain the flexibility needed to support its busy calendar.

What fans don’t see

The spectacular shots captured during a game are only one part of the story.

Behind every broadcast is a rigorous process designed to ensure safe and reliable operation.

Ung often compares operating a cable camera system to flying an airplane.

鈥淲hen you fly an airplane, the captain needs to go through a checklist. Same thing for spidercam. People don’t realize the amount of preparation work that needs to happen before every game.”

Just as a pilot doesn’t skip pre-flight procedures because yesterday’s flight was uneventful, iSeries operators follow a detailed checklist before every production. Visual inspections, software verification, communications checks, and system diagnostics are all completed before the camera ever leaves the ground.

The process is repeated before every event, regardless of how successful the previous production may have been.

Operators inspect cables, verify communications with the winches, review system status information, and confirm everything is functioning as expected before the system is cleared for operation.

 

Engineering the Experience

Operational procedures are only one part of the equation.

Long before a system is installed or a checklist is completed, safety is built into the engineering process itself.

Installing a cable camera system inside one of Canada’s busiest arenas required extensive coordination between engineering, operations, and venue teams. From site surveys and rigging considerations to flight path design and event-day procedures, every aspect of the deployment was carefully evaluated to ensure the system could deliver dynamic new perspectives while meeting Bell Centre’s operational requirements.

In our recent TV Tech听webinar听on听Automation, Highlights, and Real-Time Decisioning in Live Sports Production, the conversation quickly moved beyond technology. The panelists were really talking about a bigger change in how sports are produced, delivered, and experienced.

Fox听Sports鈥櫶 was joined by Abe Apt from AJA Video, Mike Burke from Appear, and from 天美传媒 Video. Together, they explored an industry trying to cover more events, feed more platforms, and tell better stories without simply adding more people, trucks, or time.

Scaling production without scaling everything else

The first big theme was scale. Live sports production is becoming more distributed out of necessity. For example, Fox Sports鈥 upcoming will combine a main production base in Los Angeles with remote studio shows from cities across the country.

鈥淲e connect with remote studio shows across the country – Seattle, New York, Dallas, and all over, depending on where the action is. So, it is centralized and distributed all at the same time with a massive, massive scale.鈥

Making every fan part of the action

The second theme was immersion. For Fox Sports鈥 that means more in-car cameras, more heads-up display graphics, more telemetry, and more aerial coverage. Davies described the in-car camera as something that now does more than capture a dramatic angle. It can also help explain the race. 鈥淭hat your in-car cameras now are not only a camera, but they鈥檙e also a data source. It鈥檚 a place where you can actually watch the race and understand the context of the race.鈥澨

That same idea came up in the graphics discussion. Kevin Dresser discussed how player and ball-tracking data can help production teams build graphics that explain what is happening without getting in the way of the game.

鈥淒ata is king. Most leagues now have systems in place that track players and the ball with incredible accuracy. Our focus is helping the production teams harness all that data to create new contextual graphics and experiences for fans.鈥

Using AI where it actually helps

The third theme was artificial intelligence, but not in the flashy, science-fiction sense. The panelists kept coming back to AI as something that is already working behind the scenes. It helps with tagging, tracking, asset management, graphics, highlights, monitoring, and other tasks that make听a live听production faster and easier to manage.

鈥淎I right now is mostly under the hood, not necessarily presented on the screen, with some very significant exceptions. You don鈥檛 always see it, and you don鈥檛 always see what exactly it鈥檚 doing. However, you do see what it lets us do,鈥

Abe Apt made a similar point and pushed back against the idea that AI is there to replace the production crew. In his view, the most useful applications are practical ones. 鈥淚鈥檓 very optimistic about AI, as an assistant, not as a magical non-sentient producer, and, as Mike said, the best uses right now are the boring but powerful ones. It鈥檚 definitely under the hood; you see the results of it, but it鈥檚 not thrown in your face.鈥

Kevin Dresser spoke about AI as a valuable assistant for graphics operators in live production environments, where teams must create fast-turnaround content while adding rich context to the story.

鈥淎I can help with the preparation of content to allow production teams to dive in, start adding effects and work on the storytelling 鈥 If we can automate some of those repetitive tasks it allows operators to be more effective under tight timelines鈥.

Designing for new screens and new habits

The final theme was changing viewing behavior. Sports are still听produced听around a 16:9 canvas, but fans are watching on phones, following alternate telecasts, checking social clips, and expecting more customized experiences. Davies pointed to India as a market that is already far ahead in mobile-first sports viewing. 鈥淚ndia is different in that they鈥檙e sort of phone-first, mobile-first, so their bet on 9×16 and integration is way ahead of what this industry is doing.鈥

Apt summed up the challenge neatly. It is not enough to crop a wide shot and hope it works on a phone.听The whole production language has to adapt. 鈥淭he audience just changed faster than the production grammar. This is the best way I can phrase it. And it happened so fast, too, and made me feel super old. But now I catch myself watching live events vertically.鈥

At our recent TV Tech webinar, 鈥淭he Shape of Things to Come: Live Production in 2035,鈥 , and agreed on a central point: no single technology will define the future of live production.

The takeaway was practical: broadcasters do not need to predict the next decade in detail. They need systems, teams, and facilities that can adapt as production changes.

Here are four key takeaways you can use to prepare for 飞丑补迟鈥檚 next.

1. IP is becoming the foundation for flexibility

One major theme was the shift from SDI to IP. Hawkings described an industry in transition. SDI is still common, but most new systems are now built for IP.

鈥淚P is overtaking SDI,鈥 he said, adding that SDI is 鈥渟till kind of the engine that鈥檚 running a lot of production around the world.鈥

For broadcasters, the point is not simply to replace one transport standard with another. IP creates the foundation for more flexible production models, including software-defined workflows, virtualization, remote production, and easier scaling.

Kumar connected this shift to facility design. With IP infrastructure and virtualization, broadcasters can move from rigid, purpose-built SDI workflows to more flexible, software-defined approaches.

The shift matters for new projects like . Rather than a partial step, AZPM built a fully IP-based facility. McSpadden said, 鈥渨e can actually do the whole thing 2110.鈥

2. Future-ready matters more than future-proof

One of the strongest ideas in the webinar came from McSpadden, who pushed back on the familiar phrase 鈥渇uture-proof.鈥

鈥淵ou can鈥檛 future-proof something,鈥 he said. AZPM instead focused on current needs, near-term goals, and what was reasonably possible in the long term.

They thought beyond equipment: designing for fiber, power, cooling, data, and adaptable spaces. McSpadden said studios with green screens today may use LED volumes later, requiring 鈥渁 whole lot more power and a whole lot more air conditioning.鈥

Kumar agreed. For a facility meant to last beyond 2035, 鈥渇lexibility and scalability become core design principles from day one.鈥 The message for broadcasters is simple: do not build around a single workflow. Build around the ability to change workflows.

3. AI will assist production, not replace human decision-making

AI came up throughout the webinar, but the panel kept the conversation grounded. Hawkings called AI ‘probably the most transformational technology that we will see,’ but focused on its near-term value as an assistive tool.

Kumar added that AI can personalize viewing, creating content around specific interests, teams, or topics. Viewers may eventually get 鈥渕ore personalized experiences鈥 instead of a single linear feed.

But when the conversation turned to live sports, news, and master control, the panelists agreed: people are essential. Hawkings said it is hard to replace ‘that feel that directors and producers have on a live show.’ Kumar added that live television still depends on human editorial judgment and storytelling.

made another useful point: adoption depends on a culture that can admit when something does not work. In broadcasting, 鈥渕ostly right鈥 can still create real problems. As a result, AI deployments often begin with low-risk, high-value use cases where automation can deliver measurable efficiency gains without affecting critical broadcast operations.

Facial recognition and tracking, captioning, asset tagging, semantic search, and script-aware graphics suggestions all fit because they are closely aligned with the workflow and easy to evaluate.

鈥淲e鈥檙e definitely not using AI just for the sake of it. But when we鈥檙e trying to solve a problem and AI is the best tool for the job, it makes sense.

Integration, shared context, and story metadata

Integration is the next issue. AI agents sound impressive, but they are only useful if the surrounding systems can actually talk to each other. The panel kept coming back to the same operational problem: inconsistent metadata and siloed systems speaking different languages.

鈥淭o have a durable, consistent metadata across all of these different platforms is really important to be able to take the most advantage of what is available for a specific story.鈥

Breaking news as the stress test

Breaking news is the obvious stress test. In minutes, one story can turn into live streams, social posts, web updates, clips, graphics, alerts, and archive material. The panel鈥檚 point wasn’t just that AI could help pull those pieces back together afterward, but that better orchestration and shared story data could make them easier to track, reuse, and publish across systems from the start.

Trust, guardrails, and governance

No one on the panel argued for removing judgment from the process. In fact, the opposite came through pretty clearly. If broadcasters are going to use more automation, especially in editorial and production workflows, they need to know what happened, when it happened, and why the system made a certain choice. That means keeping a clear record of what content was used, what the AI changed, what a person approved, and where the final decision came from.

It also means putting human checkpoints in the right places, especially when the output could affect what goes on air, what gets published, or how the organization鈥檚 intellectual property is handled. That is not red tape. It is the practical foundation for trust. Without it, AI stays in the experiment bucket. With it, teams have a better shot at using automation confidently in real workflows.

Editorial quality, audience insight, and better questions

One of the more interesting threads was that AI was not framed only as a speed tool. Fox is testing it to flag questions of fairness, balance, and language. Morgan Murphy is using it to surface the kinds of follow-up questions an editor or viewer might ask. Analytics mattered too, because most teams now have more audience data than they can realistically interpret on their own.

Where to start, and where to be careful

The caution was just as useful. Digital producer roles will change. Master control is not the first place to experiment with autonomous tools. Start where the risk is low, the work is repetitive, and the payoff is obvious.

For engineers, the message is simple. AI will not succeed because someone wrote a clever prompt. It will succeed when the plumbing is right: clean metadata, open interfaces, useful logs, sensible permissions, and systems people can trust when the show is live. In a recent SVG Technology in Action webinar, industry leaders explored how Levi鈥檚 Stadium reimagined the live sports experience through a major production renovation.

The conversation featured, Executive Producer and Senior Director of Game Presentation and Live Events for the San Francisco 49ers, Chief Broadcast and AV Engineer for 49er Stadium Management Company, , Project Manager for 天美传媒 Video, and , Systems Integration Lead at Diversified.

The听webinar听covered topics like SMPTE ST 2110, UHD, the Super Bowl, staffing, and lessons for venues. Here are six key takeaways.

1. Start with the event experience you need to support

Levi鈥檚 Stadium saw the renovation as a transformative leap, not just a tech update. The team recognized the need to power 49ers games, concerts, soccer matches, the Super Bowl, the World Cup, and other major events in the future.

LJ Johnson said the project had to begin with听a clear vision.

鈥淭his renovation project takes quite a bit of time, but it also takes a vision. And the vision was we knew we were going to be hosting world-class events, and so we needed to be ready.鈥澨

That point matters for any venue team. Before choosing equipment, determine the venue’s needs and desired production outcomes.

2. Know when the old system has reached its limit

Levi鈥檚 Stadium was only about ten years old when the project started, but the original production setup had reached its limits. The system had not failed, but it could not handle any more growth.

Ted Slominski described the challenge clearly.

鈥淲hen I came in during the 2023 season, it was clear to me that the system was built on a solid foundation, but it was bursting at the seams.鈥

For other venues, this is a helpful warning. If expanding means working around the current system instead of听building on听it, it might be time to reconsider the foundation.

3. Build for flexibility, not just for today鈥檚 show

Switching to IP and ST 2110 opened up a world of new possibilities for Levi鈥檚 Stadium. Suddenly, the team had more control over signal movement, routing, and event support than ever before.

For Ted, the benefit was flexibility.

It became incredibly flexible and, ultimately, a no-brainer to go IP. The technology had matured to the point where I would absolutely recommend IP to anyone building a large-scale environment like this.鈥

The renovation used a hybrid design, keeping some baseband systems where they were still useful.听This reality-based approach reduced risk and gave the venue the scale needed for big events.

4. Choose partners who can help before, during, and after the build

天美传媒 Video did more than just provide equipment. The听webinar听showed that planning, training, installation, and support were all important.

Aungelina Taglia pointed to the amount of work that happened before the first event.

鈥淭he integration and the install went so seamlessly. We all worked really, really well together, and to have a brand new technology system in that room for the first game of the season, and for it really to go off as swimmingly as it did.鈥

Lane Baird also stressed the value of strong technology partners.

鈥淲e want to have technology partners like 天美传媒 that are doing training, that are doing commissioning, hands-on commissioning.鈥

For teams planning a renovation, the main lesson is to choose partners who can support you throughout the entire process, not just at the start.

5. Use real events to learn the room

Levi鈥檚 Stadium didn鈥檛 jump straight from installation to hosting a full NFL game. The team gained hands-on experience by running concerts, soccer matches, and other live events before the season opener, making every event a learning opportunity.

LJ described the experience honestly.

鈥淲e were building the plane as we were flying.鈥

This gradual rollout gave the team time to learn, make adjustments, and improve.听It also helped set realistic expectations, since even with good planning, a new control room takes time to get used听to.

6. Remember that people make the technology work

One of the main lessons from the webinar was that technology alone does not make a show. New workflows require training, new skills, and a team capable of adapting.

LJ put it directly:

鈥淚f you spend millions of dollars on all of this technology and you don鈥檛 have the people, the ideas behind it, you just bought paperweights.鈥澨

This idea came up throughout the discussion. A modern venue needs good infrastructure, but it also needs skilled operators, engineers, creative teams, and partners who know how to use it.
