For decades, the newsroom operated on a reliable rhythm. A story was assigned, produced, and delivered to a single destination on a fixed schedule. The rundown was the backbone. Deadlines were concrete. And once content aired, the cycle reset.

That rhythm no longer exists鈥攁nd it hasn鈥檛 for some time.

In 2025, social media and video platforms overtook television as the primary news source in the United States for the first time, according to the t. Among Americans, 54% now access news via social media and video networks, compared to 50% from TV news and 48% from news websites.

showed streaming capturing 44.8% of all U.S. TV viewing, surpassing broadcast and cable combined. Among Americans under 30, just 16% subscribe to cable or satellite TV.

More news broadcast platforms, fewer people, same deadline

The output demands facing newsrooms in 2026 bear little resemblance to those of even five years ago. A typical broadcast newsroom now publishes to somewhere between 10 and 14 distinct destinations, including:

Industry hiring in 2026 explicitly prioritizes candidates who can shoot, edit, write, and report across platforms. The dedicated single-platform journalist role has virtually disappeared.

made another useful point: adoption depends on a culture that can admit when something does not work. In broadcasting, 鈥渕ostly right鈥 can still create real problems. As a result, AI deployments often begin with low-risk, high-value use cases where automation can deliver measurable efficiency gains without affecting critical broadcast operations.

Integration is the next issue. AI agents sound impressive, but they are only useful if the surrounding systems can actually talk to each other. The panel kept coming back to the same operational problem: inconsistent metadata and siloed systems speaking different languages.

鈥淭o have a durable, consistent metadata across all of these different platforms is really important to be able to take the most advantage of what is available for a specific story.鈥

Breaking news as the stress test

Breaking news is the obvious stress test. In minutes, one story can turn into live streams, social posts, web updates, clips, graphics, alerts, and archive material. The panel鈥檚 point wasn’t just that AI could help pull those pieces back together afterward, but that better orchestration and shared story data could make them easier to track, reuse, and publish across systems from the start.

Trust, guardrails, and governance

No one on the panel argued for removing judgment from the process. In fact, the opposite came through pretty clearly. If broadcasters are going to use more automation, especially in editorial and production workflows, they need to know what happened, when it happened, and why the system made a certain choice. That means keeping a clear record of what content was used, what the AI changed, what a person approved, and where the final decision came from.

It also means putting human checkpoints in the right places, especially when the output could affect what goes on air, what gets published, or how the organization鈥檚 intellectual property is handled. That is not red tape. It is the practical foundation for trust. Without it, AI stays in the experiment bucket. With it, teams have a better shot at using automation confidently in real workflows.

Editorial quality, audience insight, and better questions

One of the more interesting threads was that AI was not framed only as a speed tool. Fox is testing it to flag questions of fairness, balance, and language. Morgan Murphy is using it to surface the kinds of follow-up questions an editor or viewer might ask. Analytics mattered too, because most teams now have more audience data than they can realistically interpret on their own.

Where to start, and where to be careful

The caution was just as useful. Digital producer roles will change. Master control is not the first place to experiment with autonomous tools. Start where the risk is low, the work is repetitive, and the payoff is obvious.

We recently sat down with听leaders in听engineering, operations, and news听from Scripps, Sinclair, 天美传媒 Video, and Crispin to talk about听what听content听hubbing听really means in the age of cloud, digital-first strategies, and REMI-style workflows.

While centralizing master control is nothing new, this conversation, hosted by TV News Check, revealed just how much the concept has expanded,听and how critical planning, collaboration, and local accountability remain听key to the success of this model.

Expanding the REMI model

It鈥檚听clear that听hubbing听has grown well beyond听the听traditional idea of a master control center. Scripps, for example,听has听built a remote听鈥減roducer hub鈥澨齮hat supports听local stations听when staffing is thin or stretched.听听

These producers focus on lower-priority听day parts, which frees local teams to concentrate on high-impact newscasts and more meaningful community reporting. The model helps fill听gaps,听but听it鈥檚听also become a mentoring resource, where experienced hub producers guide newer teams on editorial decisions and deeper storytelling.听

Success with content hubs starts long before听launching. Whether听you鈥檙e听centralizing news production or master control,听preparation听needs to听include听a clear understanding of current workflows, pain points, and goals. Leadership must invest the time and the right people to build听something that solves today鈥檚 inefficiencies听and also听sets the foundations听for听future听adaptations.听

At Sinclair,听hubbing听has shifted from a regional model to one based on network听expertise. Instead of grouping stations by geography, Sinclair has created media operations centers aligned by affiliate,听with staff dedicated to understanding the nuances of networks like Fox or CW. That听makes training faster, incident response more precise, and听ultimately leads听to more efficient content distribution.听

鈥淣ow that we move to the cloud, we don鈥檛 have this barrier that we need to be stuck with the region. So you don鈥檛 need to ask the same person to know the same details across four different networks…That鈥檚 where the efficiency is coming from.”

As for REMI models in news, the panel agreed there鈥檚听interest but听acknowledged the U.S. market presents challenges. Unlike Canada or Europe, U.S. broadcasters face a massive number of hyperlocal markets and overlapping time slots, making it听difficult听to听consolidate听control rooms without sacrificing flexibility or localism.听

Change management, communication & collaboration

Technology听isn鈥檛听the听hardest听part. Changing people鈥檚 minds听and听processes is. Multiple panelists acknowledged they underestimated how long it听would听take for station staff to adapt to new systems, especially when听moving from physical听to cloud-based workflows.听听

Training needs to go beyond basic onboarding; it听must听cover real-world use cases like live sports, breaking news, and affiliate-specific edge cases,听which听don鈥檛听happen on a schedule.听

There鈥檚听also a cultural shift involved. Newsrooms still tend to think 鈥渂roadcast first,鈥 especially when it comes to planning and scripting. But leaders are pushing hard to change that mindset to 鈥渃ontent first,鈥 encouraging teams to prioritize platforms based on urgency and audience need, not just show rundowns.听

Consistent communication 鈥 especially across distributed teams 鈥 was another key theme. The group stressed the importance of clear protocols for both day-to-day coordination and emergency workflows.听听

Some station groups use messaging tools like Slack or Teams,听while听others rely on integrations within their newsroom systems, but the听takeaway was the same: everyone needs to know how to reach each other, where to find information, and听what鈥檚听expected,听particularly听when working remotely or across multiple time zones.听

鈥淓very group kind of has a different strategy鈥 so it becomes about consistency. When I need to reach out to someone in breaking news, I need to know the most reliable way to do that.鈥 鈥

Resilience & continuity in the cloud era

For both playout and disaster recovery (DR), broadcasters are increasingly leaning on hybrid and cloud-first models. Crispin shared examples of station groups that have built private or public cloud-based systems capable of full-scale playout 鈥 not just for DR, but for daily operations and even facility moves.听

Sinclair has implemented a layered DR strategy that includes cloud redundancy, local DR boxes at each station (capable of 24鈥48 hours听of content playback), and a satellite uplink failover from headquarters. This approach has already proven its worth. For example, when a tornado took out one of their facilities,听content continuity was preserved听via听cloud听and satellite feeds.听

But even with this level of centralization and automation, the panelists were unanimous: broadcasters听can鈥檛听lose sight of the need to stay rooted in their communities. While infrastructure can scale, storytelling still needs a local presence,听and investment in field reporting听remains听non-negotiable.听

Scaling content across platforms

One of the clearest opportunities听from听content听hubbing听is in versioning听and repurposing听鈥 creating content once, then adapting it for broadcast, digital, OTT, and social platforms.听听

Both Scripps and Sinclair are focusing heavily on this approach, producing stories that can be听modified听and localized for different audiences and delivery models.听It鈥檚听a strategic way to extend newsroom capacity without spreading teams too thin.听

AI is beginning to play a role here,听particularly in scripting and formatting. Several panelists noted that AI can help automate repetitive tasks like resizing content or generating first-draft versions of copy, especially for听republishing to听different platforms. However, there was听a strong听agreement that human oversight is essential. AI听is seen听as an assistive tool, not a replacement for editorial judgment or context.听

鈥淭he question is: what problem are you trying to solve? Sometimes it鈥檚 a problem for AI. Sometimes it鈥檚 a different solution that鈥檚 less expensive or less complicated”

The goal听isn鈥檛听to reduce听headcount.听It鈥檚听to reduce friction. By removing bottlenecks in the production chain, teams can spend more time creating and less time reformatting.听

Content hubs must support local, not replace it

Perhaps the听most important takeaway was that while听hubbing听is unlocking new efficiencies and flexibility,听it鈥檚听not a silver bullet. Station groups still need to invest in local journalism. No amount of cloud infrastructure or AI scripting can replace the trust built by having听real听reporters in the field.听

In fact, both Scripps and Sinclair have made deliberate efforts to听increase听local reporting staff, something that听is enabled听by听their content听hubbing听strategies.
