At our recent TV Tech webinar, 鈥淭he Shape of Things to Come: Live Production in 2035,鈥 , and agreed on a central point: no single technology will define the future of live production.

The takeaway was practical: broadcasters do not need to predict the next decade in detail. They need systems, teams, and facilities that can adapt as production changes.

Here are four key takeaways you can use to prepare for 飞丑补迟鈥檚 next.

1. IP is becoming the foundation for flexibility

One major theme was the shift from SDI to IP. Hawkings described an industry in transition. SDI is still common, but most new systems are now built for IP.

鈥淚P is overtaking SDI,鈥 he said, adding that SDI is 鈥渟till kind of the engine that鈥檚 running a lot of production around the world.鈥

For broadcasters, the point is not simply to replace one transport standard with another. IP creates the foundation for more flexible production models, including software-defined workflows, virtualization, remote production, and easier scaling.

Kumar connected this shift to facility design. With IP infrastructure and virtualization, broadcasters can move from rigid, purpose-built SDI workflows to more flexible, software-defined approaches.

The shift matters for new projects like . Rather than a partial step, AZPM built a fully IP-based facility. McSpadden said, 鈥渨e can actually do the whole thing 2110.鈥

2. Future-ready matters more than future-proof

One of the strongest ideas in the webinar came from McSpadden, who pushed back on the familiar phrase 鈥渇uture-proof.鈥

鈥淵ou can鈥檛 future-proof something,鈥 he said. AZPM instead focused on current needs, near-term goals, and what was reasonably possible in the long term.

They thought beyond equipment: designing for fiber, power, cooling, data, and adaptable spaces. McSpadden said studios with green screens today may use LED volumes later, requiring 鈥渁 whole lot more power and a whole lot more air conditioning.鈥

Kumar agreed. For a facility meant to last beyond 2035, 鈥渇lexibility and scalability become core design principles from day one.鈥 The message for broadcasters is simple: do not build around a single workflow. Build around the ability to change workflows.

3. AI will assist production, not replace human decision-making

AI came up throughout the webinar, but the panel kept the conversation grounded. Hawkings called AI ‘probably the most transformational technology that we will see,’ but focused on its near-term value as an assistive tool.

Practically, this means AI helps with tasks like transcription, metadata, captioning, clipping, archive search, rough cuts, and packaging. Hawkings pointed to tools that automatically edit based on transcription, freeing editors to focus on their craft.

Kumar added that AI can personalize viewing, creating content around specific interests, teams, or topics. Viewers may eventually get 鈥渕ore personalized experiences鈥 instead of a single linear feed.

But when the conversation turned to live sports, news, and master control, the panelists agreed: people are essential. Hawkings said it is hard to replace ‘that feel that directors and producers have on a live show.’ Kumar added that live television still depends on human editorial judgment and storytelling.

4. The future is hybrid, not all-cloud

The panelists took a practical view of cloud production. Cloud offers real value for archiving, disaster recovery, transcoding, remote production, and scaling up during major events. But not every workload belongs in the cloud.

As Kumar put it, ‘Different workloads belong in different places.’ Latency-sensitive live production and core operational systems may still work best on-premises, while the cloud can support burst capacity and flexible services.

Hawkings called this a more realistic, pragmatic approach to cloud. Broadcasters should choose the right technology for each challenge, not just follow the latest trend.

That is the bigger lesson from the webinar. The future of live production is not about betting everything on IP, cloud, AI, or software alone. It is about combining these tools to help your team create more content, work more efficiently, and stay ready for whatever lies ahead.

Shipping our 5,000th Ultrix frame is a moment that naturally invites reflection. Looking back, you start to wonder: would we have done anything differently eight years ago when we were first given that blank canvas?

The answer is no.

5000th Frame with unique mark

From the very beginning, we saw it as an opportunity to rethink what broadcast infrastructure could be. The result was Ultrix, a platform designed not just to meet the needs of the moment, but to reshape the landscape of live production. Today, Ultrix has grown into a globally recognized brand across both the broadcast and AV industries.

Our ambition from the start was to move beyond the limitations of traditional hardware-centric systems and create a platform built around a more flexible, software-driven future. When we designed Ultrix, we focused on two clear objectives: one financial and one technical.

On the financial side, we wanted to deliver a feature-rich system that was easy to deploy and operate, while allowing users to unlock additional capabilities through simple, affordable software licensing. The technical goal was to address a longstanding challenge in the market, the gap between utility and hybrid systems. At the time, facilities typically had to choose one or the other, with no practical way to transition between them without replacing hardware entirely. While possible, that approach was costly, time-consuming, and often left valuable equipment underutilized.

So we took an educated gamble to build a platform that could bridge this divide and enable hybrid workflows in a more flexible and cost-effective way.

There will always be risks

As I look back on the first couple of years, the truth is customers were sceptical. It was a very different product from a company that was mainly known for switchers. Even for the customers who understood the potential, they were unsure of the claims we made. We were asking them to trust us on this journey, having understood the challenges in the market and where the industry as a whole was heading.

I remember one such interaction with a customer in Europe who told me, 鈥淭his is amazing! But I don鈥檛 believe this will do everything you say it can do.鈥 So we sent a demo system to prove our claims. That customer now owns a number of frames and loves the product.

How our customers describe Ultrix

More of everything

As the systems began to be deployed and used, we started getting flooded with all kinds of additional requests. More I/O! Different I/O transport options! More features on the multiviewer. More types of processing! The list goes on and on.

What became very apparent is that our customers were using Ultrix in all different types of applications. Some we anticipated, some we didn鈥檛, but all of them were exciting to see and hear about, especially how the platform was helping them achieve their goals.

As we kept adding features, sizes, and transport options, new applications kept emerging. Adding integrated production switchers into the frame a few years ago created enormous interest and led to even more explosive growth.

What does it all mean?

Ultrix has become a wildly popular product for 天美传媒 as a company and can be found in all types of production environments globally. Over the past months, we鈥檝e been asking a simple but loaded question:听What will live production look like in 2035?

To explore that, we ran a new research project:听Vision 2035: Innovations Guide,听a survey-driven look at how people working in and around live production expect workflows and technology to change over the next听decade.

In this three-article series, we鈥檙e sharing some of the early patterns that emerged: (1) 飞丑补迟鈥檚 driving change today, (2) how workflows are expected to evolve, and (3) how AI, trust, and sustainability fit into the picture.

This article zooms in on the first of those threads:听What pressures are live production teams feeling right now? And how do they expect those pressures to show up in their workflows over the next few years?

The two big forces are economics and audience reality

When we asked, 鈥淲hat is currently driving the most change in your production environment?鈥, respondents pointed to a combination of economic and audience factors. Across the responses and commentary, three themes kept showing up:

  1. Budget pressure and efficiency demands: Budgets are tight, even as expectations grow. Respondents discussed the need to produce more content across more platforms, without a corresponding increase in headcount or capital spend.
  2. New audience expectations and multi-platform delivery: Audiences want more of everything, and more content tailored to their interests. That鈥檚 a growing challenge when content has to land across linear, streaming, FAST, social, in-venue, and owned platforms.
  3. Skills and talent constraints: Skill and talent shortages are very real, adding pressure to build flexible, distributed workflows and multifunctional roles instead of relying on a large, highly specialized on-site team for every production.

We could sum up these drivers as a push to 鈥渕ake more, for more people, in more places.鈥 That backdrop is important: conversations about IP, cloud, and AI aren鈥檛 happening in isolation. They鈥檙e about finding practical ways to deal with those pressures.

Most teams are trying to keep workflows flexible so they can do more with the same or fewer resources. Several contributors described this as a shift away from big, highly specialized stacks and toward multi-purpose content creation platforms that can handle a broader range of shows.

Near-term tech bets: the next five years

To see how those pressures might shape workflows in the near term, we asked: 鈥淲hich technology will have the most significant impact on your live productions in the next five years?鈥

Respondents highlighted a handful of technologies that stand out as near-term levers, rather than distant bets:

Near term, respondents expect these technologies to show up as AI-powered automation and decentralized teams, enabled by cloud-native platforms with improved latency and connectivity. It鈥檚 a pragmatic mix: move certain workloads to cloud compute where elasticity and reach help, then add assistive AI to multiply the output per operator.听

“Traditional broadcast and streaming are converging. Broadcasters are looking into cheaper, more flexible options and content creators are looking to be more professional.”

  • Assistive automation, not full autonomy: Our experts听broadly agree听that the pressure to do more with the same resources will push teams toward assistive automation and distributed productions enabled by cloud-native tools, better connectivity, and orchestration.听
  • Distributed, consolidated teams: As productions become more distributed, technical positions continue to听consolidate, with multi-skilled operators handling multiple roles and not always being in the same room鈥攐r even the same city.
  • From specialist stacks to flexible platforms: Under pressure to produce more with less, many established content providers are moving away from big, specialist stacks toward tools and workflows that can be repurposed for higher throughput.听They鈥檙e听building multi-purpose content creation platforms to meet expectations for content听that鈥檚听more personal, more immediate, and available everywhere.听

How these pressures feed into investment plans

The same story shows up again when听we听asked which technologies are priority investments over the next five years.听Budgets are favoring the plumbing and the people听who听use it:

  • IP-based media transport听emerges听as the听top听investment priority.听
  • Training and upskilling听follow听closely behind.听
  • Efficiency levers like remote/decentralized production, AI-assisted tools, and automation and orchestration platforms directly听tie听back to the pressures听we鈥檝e听already seen: more output,听the听same or fewer people, more platforms.听

Storytelling-oriented investments听(graphics, data visualization, AR/VR)听are still on the list, but they鈥檙e framed as more targeted compared to the foundational spend on transport and people.听This budget pattern听is听exactly what a hybrid, assistive-AI, IP-based roadmap looks like in practice: build transport and capability, then let software and AI raise efficiency to maximize the human craft at the core.听

What this might mean for your plans today

Vision 2035 reflects the views of a specific group of respondents听and therefore听doesn鈥檛 claim to represent the entire industry. But the patterns in these answers may be听helpful听as a benchmark when you鈥檙e looking at your own roadmap.听A few ideas you might bring into internal conversations:听

  • Start with the pressures, not the buzzwords: Map your situation against the same drivers听like听budget, audience expectations,听and听skilled resources to听ensure听technology decisions respond to those forces, rather than chasing trends for their own sake.听
  • Look for repeatable, multi-purpose workflows: If the guiding theme is 鈥渕ake more, for more people, in more places,鈥澨齣t鈥檚听worth asking: which parts of our workflow can be standardized and reused across shows, and which tools genuinely increase throughput without adding fragility?听
  • Think 鈥渁ssistive鈥 when you think AI: Respondents are clearly interested in AI and automation, but听to听multiply what operators can do, not replace them. Focusing on assistive use cases (clipping, versioning, metadata, repurposing) can be a lower-risk way to unlock value early.听
  • Pair infrastructure decisions with skills planning: IP transport, cloud-native tools, and distributed production all depend on people who are comfortable running them. Training and upskilling showing up as a top investment priority is a good reminder to keep tech and training plans linked.听

Over the past months, we鈥檝e been asking a simple but loaded question:听What will live production look like in 2035?听听

To explore that, we ran a new research project, Vision 2035, a survey-driven look at how people working in and around live production expect workflows, infrastructure, and technology to change over the next decade.

In a three-article series, we鈥檙e sharing some of the early patterns that emerged: (1) 飞丑补迟鈥檚 driving change today, (2) how infrastructure is expected to evolve, and (3) how AI, trust, and sustainability fit into the picture.

This article pulls on one thread that stood out very clearly: How do people expect to get from today鈥檚 SDI-centric facilities to a more IP- and cloud-enabled, hybrid future?听What follows is a summary of what this survey group told us about that journey, and what you might take from it when planning your own roadmap.听

What鈥檚 driving change right now?

When respondents were asked 飞丑补迟鈥檚 driving the most change in their production environments today, three themes consistently rose to the top:听

  1. Budget pressure and efficiency听demands听
  2. New audience expectations and multi-platform delivery听
  3. Ongoing technology innovation听

In practice, that means most teams are trying to do more with the same or fewer resources, serve audiences who expect content on more platforms, in more formats, and keep up with new tools and workflows that promise to help, but can also add complexity.

The conversation about SDI, IP, and cloud isn鈥檛 happening in isolation. It鈥檚 happening amid tightening budgets, new viewing habits, and a constant push to work smarter with the people already on staff.

Looking ahead: Where respondents expect the big shifts

We also asked: 鈥淲hat will be the most significant change in live production over the next ten years?鈥

A few answers clearly stood out:

  • 鈥淚P overtakes SDI鈥 was the single most selected option, chosen by roughly a third of respondents.
  • AI as a production assistant was another major theme.
  • Remote and distributed live production, as well as the transition to software-defined tools and infrastructure, also featured strongly.

Taken together, those responses suggest that many teams expect:

  • The underlying plumbing of live production to become more IP-centric and software-defined
  • AI to layer on top of that infrastructure as an assistive capability rather than a total replacement for human roles
  • Production resources and teams to become more distributed by default
At the same time, written comments and expert contributions acknowledge that SDI is unlikely to disappear overnight, especially in cost-sensitive regions and for well-established plants that continue to operate reliably. The tension between 鈥淪DI still works鈥 and 鈥淚P is clearly coming鈥 runs through many of the answers.

Where will workflows actually live by 2035?

Two questions helped build a picture of how respondents think infrastructure will be structured in the longer term:听

  1. Where do you expect most live production workflows to happen by 2035?听
  2. By 2035, what percentage of your live production workflows do you expect to be cloud-based?听

On the first question, only a small minority felt that, by 2035, the majority of workflows would still live in a traditional, centralized on-prem facility. Many more pointed to a hybrid model, where workflows span on-prem, data center, and cloud environments.

On the second question, few responses sat at either extreme of 鈥渁lmost nothing in the cloud鈥 or 鈥渆verything in the cloud.鈥 Most forecasts clustered around a substantial but not total shift to cloud-based workflows.

 

The overall picture looks like this:听

  • Hybrid becomes the norm rather than pure cloud or pure on-prem听
  • Cloud is seen as a significant part of the mix, but not the only pillar听
  • On-prem and dedicated infrastructure remain important, especially where timing, bandwidth, and local control matter most听

The guide summarizes this as a 鈥cloud-enabled backbone鈥 rather than a fully virtualized future.听

The edge stays physical (for good reasons)

We also asked which parts of the production chain respondents think are least likely to move to the cloud. Here, answers gravitated toward the high-touch, timing-critical parts of live production, including Camera operations and robotics, live switching and vision mixing, branding, and real-time graphics

The reasoning that emerges from the survey and commentary is straightforward:

  1. Latency and performance matter. For high-stakes, real-time decisions, even small delays are a problem.
  2. Operator 鈥渇eel鈥 is hard to replace. Many contributors highlighted the value of physical control surfaces and muscle memory built over years of live production.

So while infrastructure services such as routing, processing, multiviewing, and certain storage or playout functions are seen as strong candidates for virtualization and consolidation, tactile, on-air operations are expected to remain anchored in dedicated hardware and local control for longer.

That doesn鈥檛 mean nothing changes at the edge; it simply suggests that respondents see more immediate headroom to move and centralize things in the core first.

How ready are facilities for cloud-only productions today?

To balance the future-focused questions, we included a very practical one:听鈥淒o you believe your facility could successfully run a major live event entirely in the cloud today?鈥澨

Here, the answers were notably more cautious:听

  • Less than a quarter of respondents felt confident they could run a major live event fully in the cloud today.听
  • A听significant number听indicated听they听don鈥檛听yet use cloud tools at all for 濒颈惫别听production or听are still in the exploration or proof-of-concept stage.听

In written responses and expert commentary, concerns about resilience came up regularly鈥攆or example, what would happen if a widespread cloud service outage affected a marquee broadcast.听The pattern that emerges is that many organizations see cloud as an increasingly important part of their strategy, but are more comfortable using it as a complement to existing infrastructure rather than the sole foundation for their most critical productions right now.听

Where investment is heading in the next five years

Vision 2035 reflects the views of a specific group of respondents and doesn鈥檛 claim to speak for the entire industry. But their answers do highlight some patterns that may be useful as you shape your own plans.听

A few themes you might take into your next roadmap discussion:听

  1. Plan for hybrid, not a single leap: Many respondents听appear to be听working toward a world where IP and cloud are core parts of the infrastructure, but not the only pillars. That points toward roadmaps built around phased projects rather than an all-or-nothing migration.听
  2. Virtualize the core before you virtualize everything: The distinction between 鈥渃ore services鈥 and 鈥渆dge operations鈥 shows up clearly. Routing, processing,听multiviewing, and some playout or storage functions are strong candidates to move into shared compute and IP fabrics, while cameras, panels, and certain on-air roles may stay physical for longer.听
  3. Treat cloud as strategic capacity: In the near term, cloud looks most attractive for scaling up during peaks, experimenting with new workflows, or supporting additional productions鈥攚ith hybrid models providing a safety net for mainline events.
  4. Invest in both plumbing and people: The emphasis on IP transport alongside training suggests that respondents see technology and skills as two sides of the same coin. New infrastructure without operator confidence is unlikely to deliver the results听they鈥檙e听looking for.听

If there鈥檚 one common thread through these responses, it鈥檚 that most teams aren鈥檛 planning for a dramatic 鈥淪DI off, cloud on鈥 moment.

Instead, they鈥檙e picturing a series of practical steps:

  • Gradually tilting new investments toward IP and software-defined tools
  • Virtualizing core services where it makes sense
  • Keeping the edge grounded in operator confidence and real-time performance
  • Using cloud as an important part of the mix, not the only pillar

For some organizations, that might start with a single hybrid control room or an IP-ready truck. For others, it may mean piloting a cloud-based workflow around secondary shows while mainline productions remain firmly hybrid. In every case, the path looks incremental rather than all-or-nothing.

Over the past months, we鈥檝e been asking a simple but loaded question:听What will live production look like in 2035?听听

To explore that, we ran a new research project:听the Vision 2035: Innovations Guide, a survey-driven look at how people working in and around live production expect workflows, infrastructure, and technology to change over the next decade. 听

In this three-article series, we鈥檙e sharing some of the early patterns that emerged: (1) 飞丑补迟鈥檚 driving change today, (2) how infrastructure is expected to evolve, and (3) how AI, trust, and sustainability fit into the picture.听

This article zooms in on that third thread:听Where are teams already using AI, what do they hope it will unlock, what worries them about it,听and how does sustainability fit into the way they鈥檙e planning the next decade?听

Where AI is already helping today

Rather than asking what AI might do one day, we started with a more straightforward question: 鈥淲hich parts of your workflow are already using or trialing automation or AI?鈥

Respondents told us that AI and automation are already听appearing听in听their听day-to-day workflows, mainly听helping with听repetitive, version-heavy tasks. The most common current uses include:

Where respondents expect AI to make the biggest difference

Looking ahead, respondents were also asked: 鈥淲hich areas of live production do you expect will most benefit from AI?鈥

Their answers point AI at the same version-heavy, repeatable parts of the stack first:

The guide describes this as less a revolution than a workload reallocation: AI supports the 鈥減roduce once, version to many鈥 reality of modern content, without placing extra load on production teams.

Experts also expect operators to benefit most when AI folds into familiar control surfaces, eventually becoming 鈥渏ust another tool running in the background鈥 that lets multi-skilled operators do more.听AI is already beginning to transform our business; within a few years, it鈥檚 just going to be how many things are done.

鈥淎I will be able to create shows from previous data and video, minimizing setup time and rehearsals. Studios will be able to provide more diverse content with the flexibility of quick setup and the use of robots at any time of day or night. This will allow more content: the difference will be what the creative teams can add to differentiate shows.鈥

What keeps people cautious about AI

Alongside potential gains, we asked respondents:听鈥淲hat concerns you most about increased AI use in broadcast production?鈥

Their top concerns land exactly where you might expect:

Only a small group reported no major concerns.听A recurring theme in both survey responses and expert commentary is that AI should remain a support, not a replacement. Progress here is less about 鈥渕agic鈥 and more about reliable engineering and good editorial and data hygiene.

One survey participant captures the human side of those concerns:听鈥淎 lot of what we watch is passion-driven. If you don鈥檛 have real people doing the jobs to input the same level of passion, the quality is going to become stale and sterile.鈥

Why trust and provenance matter more as AI spreads

As AI becomes more capable, respondents and experts also raised a deeper question: how will audiences know what to trust?听It鈥檚 already getting harder to tell 飞丑补迟鈥檚 genuine, and brand perception and established trust will likely matter as much as the technology itself.

Several expert comments emphasize provenance and brand equity. There is currently no good way to secure provenance, and the industry may be 5 to 10 years behind in confidently verifying that a video is real.

But established听broadcasters听still carry weight because of the equity and trust built into them听through听past performance and accuracy.听In practical terms,听teams should:

  • Prioritize AI in areas where quality is measurable and can be corrected before air,听like captioning, localization, and templated workflows.
  • Keep human controls on creative choices and anything that touches the brand.
  • Prioritize provenance for any output that could affect viewer trust.

That adds up to a simple pattern: use AI to help get more done, but let people听at the core听remain the anchors of trust.

How sustainability fits into real-world decisions

We also asked:听鈥淗ow important is sustainability when making technology decisions for production?鈥

Nearly two-thirds of respondents agreed that sustainability is important, but most are not making key decisions based on sustainability alone. Teams still optimize for cost, reliability, and output first.听Even so, the guide highlights some notable findings:

  • Sustainable infrastructure is a priority investment for a meaningful听portion听of respondents.
  • Remote and distributed workforces can reduce travel costs and environmental impact.
  • Hybrid productions with shared compute and memory resources may drive further sustainability gains鈥攕omething that could be important as AI workloads increase energy use.

In听live video production, the biggest footprint is often travel and energy use. Being able to spin resources up and down as required in the cloud or elsewhere can be a differentiator when it improves both content quality and the bottom line.

In other words, sustainability is听increasingly appearing听as a by-product of听more efficient, flexible operations,听rather than a standalone goal.

What this might mean for your technology roadmap

Vision 2035 reflects the views of a specific group of respondents听and听doesn鈥檛 claim to represent the entire industry. But their answers do highlight some patterns you may want to keep in mind as you plan your own next steps.听

A few ideas you might bring into internal discussions:听

  • Aim AI at the workload, not the show: Start where AI can clearly remove repetitive work鈥攃aptioning, tagging, versioning, localization鈥攚hile leaving creative control and on-air decisions firmly听in the hands of听human teams.听
  • Pair every AI initiative with a trust and provenance question: For anything that could affect audience听perception, ask: how will we verify this, review it, and stand behind it if听there鈥檚听a dispute?听
  • Keep humans at the center of brand-critical work:The survey responses and expert commentary both imply a strong role for people in any work that touches editorial judgment, storytelling, and brand voice, even as assistive tools expand.
  • Treat sustainability as an outcome of efficiency moves: Remote production, hybrid infrastructure, and elastic compute often improve both听economics听and environmental impact. Framing sustainability in those terms can make it easier to align with budget and performance goals.听
  • Design pilots with clear guardrails: Narrowly scoped trials can help teams gain confidence in AI-assisted workflows without risking marquee properties.

Imagine if roads did not connect. Every time you got off the highway or made a right turn, you鈥檇 have to stop and adjust your car for a different surface.  

Who would buy a car?  

Yet, this lack of connection in live video production is a painful, time-consuming reality. Signal-processing gear from one manufacturer doesn鈥檛 connect with equipment from another 鈥 often (sadly) intentionally.鈥 

In 2006, openGear庐 changed this entirely.鈥   

The Genesis of openGear 

In 1993, 13 years before its launch, openGear was conceived to solve an unexpected and frustrating problem we experienced developing our first digital signal processing frame 鈥 the DFR-8110. 

The DFR-8110, which was compatible with our competitors鈥 frames and cards, was perhaps a victim of its own success.  

When we looked to upgrade it to support High-Definition video, we (perhaps naively) thought it would be faster and simpler to create new cards for existing frames. We floated the idea with most of the major industry players. It did not go as expected. 

We were repeatedly told that this did not fit with their business models 鈥 which were essentially designed to lock a customer into their ecosystem.  

That didn鈥檛 fit with our values. And it was making life more complicated for the entire industry.  

We decided to go beyond, creating our own frame and taking a considerable risk that could transform the industry by making production infrastructure more accessible and flexible for every producer 鈥 regardless of their equipment preferences.  

It also had the potential to leave us flat on our faces.  

The search for like-minded partners began.  

And went on.  

Eventually, we found two manufacturers who bought into the vision, and the work of building it began. 

A Beginning and an End 

In 2006, after many years of engineering, networking, and wrangling, 天美传媒 Video 鈥 alongside and 鈥 launched the openGear DFR-8310, a ten-slot frame.  

Along with it, we launched DashBoard, a free software program that made integrating and controlling all equipment in the system simple, and accessible from anywhere with a computer monitor.  

openGear was an instant hit and was awarded the for outstanding technical achievement by The Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television that same year.  

This marked the beginning of openGear鈥檚 rise and the end (we hoped) of restrictive video production infrastructure. 

Leaps and Bounds 

Over the next two years, the openGear ecosystem exploded, growing more than ten-fold, and it didn鈥檛 stop. By 2014, openGear infrastructure was compatible with technology from over 50 partners, accumulating more monthly.  

This resulted in another accolade in 2015 when 天美传媒 was awarded an Emmy庐 for Broadcast Production Distribution and Conversion Equipment, By the end of the following year, the openGear partner network had leapt to more than 100 strong.听听

A mere decade after our original trio dared to ask, 鈥淲hy not?鈥 鈥斺痺e could hear the industry shouting back a resounding: 鈥淭hat鈥檚 why!鈥 

Our determination bolstered, and we doubled down on both R&D and partner relations.  

openGear Today 

Today, the openGear ecosystem has nearly 200 partners and is used worldwide. We have shipped over 55,000 frames for uses ranging from traditional broadcasting productions to esports, digital-first productions and the highest profile global events.  

As modular infrastructure, openGear adapts well to almost any application, and we invest millions of dollars every year to add features and explore new ways to use it based on feedback from customers.   

That investment has resulted in over 250 天美传媒 openGear cards created to date. Many of them have been game changers for the industry, such as:  

  • OSG-8971– A versatile SRT gateway that connects on-prem, cloud and remote productions and teams.
  • Gator-Toolbox that replaces the role of 1RU 鈥淧izza-box鈥 signal processors in a modular card.  
  • MC1 series 鈥 The world鈥檚 most popular Master Control and branding card.  
  • NWE-3GA 鈥 A single-card solution for Nielsen Watermarking.  

The Core: OGX Frame 

Crafted in 天美传媒鈥檚 Iroquois facility, the OGX frame is the core of openGear. It supports continuous, modular expansion with new processing cards making it adaptable to limitless functions, new formats, and I/O standards as they evolve, ensuring that productions can expand and evolve easily whenever they want 鈥 and without the restrictions imposed by their existing vendors.  

The Software Unifying It All: DashBoard 

Behind the hardware is the often-unsung software tying it all together: DashBoard.  

DashBoard 鈥 released the same year as the original openGear frame 鈥斺痠s鈥痜orever-free鈥痵oftware that allows users to integrate, monitor, and control their production stack in simple, highly customizable control panels. Users can program custom automated workflows for any equipment in the openGear ecosystem, reducing manual work, minimizing errors, and making production operations more reliable.  

The flexibility and usability of this combination has seen DashBoard used well outside of broadcast production, for everything ranging from firework display timing and ignition to unified event venue control, fire alarm systems, and even home cinemas.

Matching technology to production reality

One of the most effective frameworks is to start by identifying your production tier and matching transport and contribution choices accordingly.听听

The guide outlines four tiers of production, each with its own characteristics:听

Tier 1+听

This is the highest level of live production 鈥 think Super Bowl, Olympics, and World Cup. These events demand uncompressed or visually lossless quality, near-zero latency, and maximum reliability. Here, ST 2110 is the go-to transport standard, paired with TR-07/TR-08, JPEG XS, or uncompressed video, delivered over dark fiber or dedicated IP circuits.听

Tier 1听

These include high-profile professional sports and national broadcasts. The same transport standards apply, but with slightly fewer resources and a greater focus on the efficient use of bandwidth. HEVC, JPEG XS, and dedicated circuits still dominate here.听

Tier 2听

Regional sports, local entertainment, and public events fall into this category. Budgets are tighter, and hybrid workflows are common. NDI, SRT, RIST, and H.264/HEVC offer practical trade-offs between quality, cost, and bandwidth. Hybrid SDI/IP environments still play a major role.听

Tier 3听

These are low-budget, niche-interest events 鈥 high school sports, local council meetings, small religious broadcasts. Public internet is often the only viable contribution path. Tools like WebRTC, NDI Bridge, and low-cost compression codecs dominate. Simplicity, affordability, and cloud production are priorities.听

This tier-based thinking provides a concrete foundation for IP transport decisions, but it’s only the beginning.听

Tiers for Facilities

The same tiering logic applies to fixed facilities.听

Top-level facilities 鈥 such as CNN’s Hudson Yards or The Sphere in Las Vegas 鈥 operate with thousands of multicast streams and IP endpoints. They rely on standards like SMPTE ST 2110 and precision timing protocols such as PTP to maintain exacting performance across massive infrastructure. In similar large-scale IP environments, visually lossless compression formats like JPEG XS are often used to optimize bandwidth without compromising quality.听

Mid-level facilities 鈥 often regional broadcasters, government agencies, or universities 鈥 lean into NDI and hybrid SDI-IP models, layering in more advanced protocols where justified by production value.听

Lower-level facilities 鈥 such as high schools, small studios, or non-profits 鈥 often remain in SDI, adding NDI or WebRTC at the edge. Their IP journey starts with simplicity and grows based on real need.听

Balancing latency, compression, and bandwidth

One of the most critical considerations is how compression, quality, and bandwidth are in constant negotiation with one another. Your IP transport decision lies at the center of that triangle.听

  • Want pristine, uncompressed video? You’ll need a high-bandwidth, low-latency connection, as well as the budget to support it.听
  • Need to operate over public internet or cellular networks? You’ll rely on compressed video, accept some latency, and choose protocols like SRT or RIST.听
  • Operating in the middle? JPEG XS offers a visually lossless sweet spot. High quality, but with lower bandwidth requirements and support in ST 2110 and TR-07 workflows.听

This isn’t just a technical puzzle. It’s a strategic one. Your audience expectations, monetization strategy, and available infrastructure all influence where you land.听

IP Contribution vs. IP Transport: What's the difference?
