Imagine if roads did not connect. Every time you got off the highway or made a right turn, you鈥檇 have to stop and adjust your car for a different surface.  

Who would buy a car?  

Yet, this lack of connection in live video production is a painful, time-consuming reality. Signal-processing gear from one manufacturer doesn鈥檛 connect with equipment from another 鈥 often (sadly) intentionally.鈥 

In 2006, openGear庐 changed this entirely.鈥   

The Genesis of openGear 

In 1993, 13 years before its launch, openGear was conceived to solve an unexpected and frustrating problem we experienced developing our first digital signal processing frame 鈥 the DFR-8110. 

The DFR-8110, which was compatible with our competitors鈥 frames and cards, was perhaps a victim of its own success.  

When we looked to upgrade it to support High-Definition video, we (perhaps naively) thought it would be faster and simpler to create new cards for existing frames. We floated the idea with most of the major industry players. It did not go as expected. 

We were repeatedly told that this did not fit with their business models 鈥 which were essentially designed to lock a customer into their ecosystem.  

That didn鈥檛 fit with our values. And it was making life more complicated for the entire industry.  

We decided to go beyond, creating our own frame and taking a considerable risk that could transform the industry by making production infrastructure more accessible and flexible for every producer 鈥 regardless of their equipment preferences.  

It also had the potential to leave us flat on our faces.  

The search for like-minded partners began.  

And went on.  

Eventually, we found two manufacturers who bought into the vision, and the work of building it began. 

A Beginning and an End 

In 2006, after many years of engineering, networking, and wrangling, 天美传媒 Video 鈥 alongside and 鈥 launched the openGear DFR-8310, a ten-slot frame.  

Along with it, we launched DashBoard, a free software program that made integrating and controlling all equipment in the system simple, and accessible from anywhere with a computer monitor.  

openGear was an instant hit and was awarded the for outstanding technical achievement by The Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television that same year.  

This marked the beginning of openGear鈥檚 rise and the end (we hoped) of restrictive video production infrastructure. 

Leaps and Bounds 

Over the next two years, the openGear ecosystem exploded, growing more than ten-fold, and it didn鈥檛 stop. By 2014, openGear infrastructure was compatible with technology from over 50 partners, accumulating more monthly.  

This resulted in another accolade in 2015 when 天美传媒 was awarded an Emmy庐 for Broadcast Production Distribution and Conversion Equipment, By the end of the following year, the openGear partner network had leapt to more than 100 strong.听听

A mere decade after our original trio dared to ask, 鈥淲hy not?鈥 鈥斺痺e could hear the industry shouting back a resounding: 鈥淭hat鈥檚 why!鈥 

Our determination bolstered, and we doubled down on both R&D and partner relations.  

openGear Today 

Today, the openGear ecosystem has nearly 200 partners and is used worldwide. We have shipped over 55,000 frames for uses ranging from traditional broadcasting productions to esports, digital-first productions and the highest profile global events.  

As modular infrastructure, openGear adapts well to almost any application, and we invest millions of dollars every year to add features and explore new ways to use it based on feedback from customers.   

That investment has resulted in over 250 天美传媒 openGear cards created to date. Many of them have been game changers for the industry, such as:

The Core: OGX Frame 

Crafted in 天美传媒鈥檚 Iroquois facility, the OGX frame is the core of openGear. It supports continuous, modular expansion with new processing cards making it adaptable to limitless functions, new formats, and I/O standards as they evolve, ensuring that productions can expand and evolve easily whenever they want 鈥 and without the restrictions imposed by their existing vendors.  

The Software Unifying It All: DashBoard 

Behind the hardware is the often-unsung software tying it all together: DashBoard.  

DashBoard 鈥 released the same year as the original openGear frame 鈥斺痠s鈥痜orever-free鈥痵oftware that allows users to integrate, monitor, and control their production stack in simple, highly customizable control panels. Users can program custom automated workflows for any equipment in the openGear ecosystem, reducing manual work, minimizing errors, and making production operations more reliable.  

The flexibility and usability of this combination has seen DashBoard used well outside of broadcast production, for everything ranging from firework display timing and ignition to unified event venue control, fire alarm systems, and even home cinemas.

Voyager, the Unreal Engine-based render engine, delivered photorealistic environments, augmented reality (AR) elements, and stylised virtual worlds.

Voyager Trackless Studio offered a cost-effective approach to virtual production, using the same high-quality assets and realism as fully tracked environments, but without the need for additional hardware or infrastructure.

Lucid Studio provided an intuitive control layer, enabling producers, journalists, and presenters to manage virtual productions with confidence. Its integration with MOS-driven workflows made adding or editing virtual graphics as seamless as updating a lower third.

Live TV doesn’t just happen. It’s shaped in real time by video switchers, the hidden tools that make broadcasts possible. Here’s everything you need to know about this secretive bit of tech.

Agility is the new benchmark听

Think about the last live sports game you watched on TV. The whole experience feels like it was edited in a studio, but it鈥檚 happening in real time.听

Before a replay, a stinger animation with the broadcaster鈥檚 logo flashes on screen. After a goal, the feed cuts to the team鈥檚 logo. Then it cycles through camera shots of the players, the bench, the crowd, and the celebration on the ice.听听

The flow between angles, graphics, and effects comes from a key piece of equipment in live production: the video production switcher 鈥 also called a video mixer or vision mixer.听

What is a video switcher?

A video switcher is the tool that allows live productions to look cinematic, even as they unfold. It combines multiple video sources 鈥 cameras, graphics, or pre-recorded clips 鈥 into a single, polished feed. Operators can cut between angles, add graphics, roll replays, and apply effects instantly.听

Switchers can be specialized hardware systems with control panels featuring numerous bright buttons. They can also be software solutions that run on a computer. Either way, they provide the ability to direct, edit, and enhance a broadcast in real-time. Without them, live shows would feature only a single static camera shot with no overlays or transitions.听

Our founder, John 天美传媒, designed and built the company鈥檚 very first production switcher in 1974,听laying the foundation for what would become a global leader in live production technology. From that first switcher onward, 天美传媒 has continued to innovate, shaping the way broadcasters and creators bring their stories to air.

How a video switcher works

At the most basic level, a switcher connects inputs to outputs. Inputs can include cameras, playback devices, or computers. Outputs may be monitors, projectors, or the live broadcast feed.听

Thes switcher receives all the video feeds or inputs. An operator or Technical Director decides what goes on air and uses the control panel to implement it.听听

A multiviewer display shows all available sources side by side. Another screen shows what the audience sees live. With a button press, the operator can change cameras, trigger a replay, or overlay a graphic.听They can also include digital video effects, transitions, and keyers for tasks like green screen weather reports or live lower thirds.听

A Downstream Keyer (DSK) allows you to add graphics like subtitles, headlines, or logos on video. Mix Effects (M/E) banks let operators create and manage multi-layered effects and transitions simultaneously.

You can also integrate audio mixers to balance sound alongside video. Storage and playback features allow operators to roll clips or record the live program feed. Operators can program switchers with macros and sequences, allowing them to recall complex transitions with just one button press.听

ISO recordings (short for isolated) enable a single camera angle to be captured separately from the program feed 鈥 a valuable tool for replays or correcting mistakes in post-production.听

Hardware vs. software video mixers

Not every production has the same needs, which is why switchers come in many shapes and sizes, including both hardware and software forms.听

Hardware switchers like Carbonite Ultra are the classic choice for broadcast environments. They provide numerous inputs and outputs, are highly reliable, and are relatively easy to use for trained operators. They come in a wide range of sizes and functionality, depending on your production environment and needs.听

Software switchers like Carbonite Code, on the other hand, are flexible and affordable. They do not take up physical space, making them suitable for temporary or small-scale productions.听听

The trade-off is that they rely on the computer’s processing power. They are also limited by the availability of ports and compatibility. For certain setups, you may need additional hardware, such as GPUs or adapters.听

Both approaches have their place, and many productions even combine them for maximum flexibility.听

Over the years, I鈥檝e deployed spidercam systems in stadiums and arenas around the world, for every event you can think of 鈥 from concerts to cricket to football. But the 153rd Open at Royal Portrush stands out for me. This wasn鈥檛 just another project. It was a breakthrough in one of the most tradition-steeped sports.

A first for golf and cable-based cameras

spidercam has a proven track record in football, rugby, cricket, and live entertainment. But golf? That remained a big question mark. Until now.

For the first time in The Open history, a cable-based camera flew over the 18th green, delivering sweeping, cinematic views to millions of fans around the world. From emotional close-ups to smooth tracking across the crowd and course, spidercam brought a new perspective to one golf’s most iconic tournaments.

Redefining golf broadcasts

Before this project, spidercam hadn鈥檛 drawn much interest from the golf leagues. So, what changed? Mostly, the appetite of viewers, producers, and broadcasters for more variety and distinction. With so much new content, and particularly new sports content, producers want to stand out any way they can.

Our production partner, , had the vision 鈥 and had built the trust 鈥 to push those boundaries for The Open. The pitch was the elevated storytelling that spidercam would bring to The Open, with immersive, emotionally resonant, and most importantly, unique camera angles and movements.

A significant challenge in getting a cable-based camera system approved for The Open was that any new technology must be virtually invisible. Golf demands precision, quiet, and respect for the player鈥檚 focus. To satisfy those strict conditions, we worked closely with EMG and to engineer a setup that was visually unobstrusive but would still give The Open access to all the latest technology available.

The solution was a bespoke four-point support system for spidercam that respected sightlines, avoided distracting players, and preserved the pristine aesthetics of the course.

Planning from afar

Another uniquely challenging aspect of this deployment was that we never set foot on site during planning, due to logistical constraints.听 Instead, we managed the entire design process remotely, using drone imagery, CAD drawings, and our proprietary spidercam simulation software. That allowed us to virtually map cable paths, flight zones, and potential obstructions precisely without ever physically being there.

Rather than being a compromise, this process demonstrated the robustness of our remote design methodology, showing how complex systems can be engineered and deployed accurately from afar, even under restrictive conditions. Crucially, we were able to incorporate safety checks and redundancy planning at every stage to mitigate risk and ensure reliability on site.

Smooth execution. Zero disruption.

Installation came with its own set of challenges. At Portrush, the coastal winds were a constant factor, particularly during tower setup, when safety margins are at their tightest. Working closely with Unusual Rigging, we installed anemometers linked directly to our operating desk, giving us live wind data to monitor conditions and keep the system safe at all times.

Gameplay added another layer of complexity. To protect players, spectators, and the course (and the cameras!), we pre-defined 鈥渘o-fly鈥 and 鈥渟afe park鈥 zones and timings.

Just as important, our spidercam operators worked hand-in-hand with the directors, advising them on what was achievable within the environment and suggesting camera movements that complemented the rhythm of play and would add to the drama and storytelling of the tournament.

The final putt, from a new perspective

The payoff was undeniable: sweeping aerials of chips landing with pinpoint precision, graceful follow-throughs on decisive putts, and that unforgettable closing shot: spidercam gliding silently above the 18th green as the crowd erupted.

Watching that final putt drop with spidercam overhead gave me goosebumps. That moment captured exactly what we set out to achieve. It wasn’t just a technical win. It was a creative leap forward.

Cloud production has been a talking point in media and entertainment for years. But the focus is no longer just on the potential of mass adoption 鈥 the discussion is about which applications deliver real results.

So far, cloud adoption has been mostly in content distribution, data tagging and analysis, and transcoding. But the real momentum is building in live content creation. It鈥檚 a more complex environment, but it鈥檚 becoming increasingly cloud ready.

Why latency isn’t a problem anymore

In environments where the cloud makes sense, bandwidth and latency aren鈥檛 an issue. Operators using NDI or SRT often describe it as if they鈥檙e right there in the control room. Push a button, and it feels instant. That kind of responsiveness is what makes the cloud viable for real-time production.听
